Trade In Information

Honesty,
is the best policy” and with that being said let’s
discuss one
the most misunderstood and frustrating portions of a car deal to some,
“THE TRADE”. “THE TRADE”, can be affected from the consumer’s
eyes by
the dealer in some of the listed ways:
“THE
TRADE”, can be affected from the consumer’s eyes by the
dealer in some of the listed ways:
- Emotional
attachment
- Bad
negotiations of the car deal that placed you in the vehicle you
are trading in now
- Having
negative equity in the vehicle you had prior to the one that you
are trading in now
- After-market
and custom parts added, that you feel may help it’s
value but actually makes it worse
- Physical
damage such as dents, dings, scrapes, scratches, squeaks, knocking,
and even tire wear, that appear at the actual appraisal and not
online or in a book when you look up your estimated value.
- Denial,
and no I’m not talking about a river overseas. Denial of
realizing we own a depreciating asset. This factor leads consumers
to overlook what’s right in front of them on sites
like “Kelly
Blue Book”, “Edmunds”, or “N.A.D.A.”. How
many of you read the very next sentence that
starts under the pricing you just viewed? It’s the start of the most
important verbiage on the page. It tells you that the price doesn’t
include dealer cost of making the vehicle ready for sale, advertising, sales
commissions, arranging financing and insurance, and standing behind the vehicle
for any mechanical or safety problems. In other words, it’s like
you just won the lottery and forgot that Uncle Sam was going to take
taxes away from your winnings.
- Trade
appraisal books and web-sites are a great guide. Actual trade
allowances are giving off “REAL TIME MARKET VALUE”.
So
what or how do you brace yourself for what’s going to happen
when you get it appraised? I can’t give you a 100% full proof
way of know the actual value, but this should put you in a ball-park
frame of mind. Go to www.kbb.com (which is Kelly Blue Book) and put
all the specifications that your vehicle has into the system. Then
to help yourself from the emotional attachment that you have for
your vehicle put in 1 less condition than you feel that you deserve.
Example: If you feel that your vehicle is in excellent condition
enter it in good, if it’s in good condition enter it in fair,
if it’s fair condition enter it in poor and if it’s worse
than that then, well…you get the point. Realize that there
are about 5 automobile “Trade Pricing Guides” used mainly
on the market, but 3 are the most commonly used “Kelly
Blue Book”, “Edmunds”, and “N.A.D.A.”. With
this being said let’s take a real live example that you can
do to test my theory. First open a separate window for “Kelly
Blue Book”, “Edmunds”, and “N.A.D.A.”.
Next after you have all 3 windows up we are going to use these specifications
on each site:
- Select
2001 Dodge Durango.
- Select
SLT Trim (on Kelly Blue Book you need to select “Sport
Utility 4D”, on Edmunds select “4 DR SLT”, and on N.A.D.A.
select “Wagon 4D
SLT (2WD).
- Select “4.7
Liter V-8” for engine size.
- Select “Automatic” for
transmission.
- Select “2
Wheel Drive” for Transaxel or Drive Train.
- Select “60,000” for
mileage.
- Select
options on “Kelly Blue Book” as follows; “tilt
wheel, cruise
control, Am/Fm stereo, cassette, single compact disc, premium sound,
dual front air bags, leather, third seat, quad seating, roof rack,
premium wheels, and running boards”.
- Select
options on “Edmunds” as follows; “Am/Fm
cassette/cd audio
system, air conditioning front and rear, alarm system, antilock brakes,
automatic dimming rearview mirror, garage door opener, infinity audio
system, leather seats, leather steering wheel, overhead console, power
mirrors, running boards, and 3rd seat.
- Select
options on “N.A.D.A.” as follows; “3rd
row seat, luggage
rack, rear bucket seats, running boards, compact disc player, rear air
conditioning.
- Select “Good” for
the vehicles condition.
Oh
my goodness!!! What a dilemma? Not 1 of the 3 major trade adjustment
guides agree. I mean “Kelly Blue Book” has your price at $10,765, “Edmunds” has
your price at “$12,173”, and “N.A.D.A” has your price
at “$13,925”. Isn’t it amazing? Why in the world are they so
different? Again, THEY ARE ALL TO BE USED AS AVERAGES, AND WILL NEVER BE OR WERE
INTENDED TO BE USED AS LAW. The market value of vehicles are influenced by so
many things that I’d have to be a novelist before I could even get you
to understand the surface of it. Call me, let’s set up an appointment to
get you the deal that you deserve without the hassle. area.
